Wrestling
Since 2023, I have taken images at various high school and collegiate wrestling tournaments, including the Illinois High School State Wrestling Championships, Midlands Championships, and the Women’s College Wrestling National Championships.
Although I began taking images of wrestling because I needed reference imagery, some images now exist as straight photographs. If the imagery doesn't need to be translated into another medium to be compelling, I now leave it as a photograph.
This is a small sampling of photographs which investigate wrestling as a conceptual metaphor. Many explore flattened and compressed space, and as a result, look like collages. Some have more of a stagelike appearance, with the figures reminescent of classical Greek tableaus and poses. Some images suspend a particular movement, emotion, feeling, gesture, stance. Others aim to capture a certain gaze or moment of time.
